Bredon, Tewkesbury

This project presented a rare and rewarding challenge: restoring and automating a set of historic metal gates while preserving their original character. With sections of the gates formally listed, careful planning was essential from the outset. Over an 8–10 week lead time, the gates were fully dismantled and removed from site, before being meticulously refurbished to return them to their ornate, traditional appearance before any automation work could begin.

The client required a tailored solution that combined sympathetic restoration with modern security capability. To achieve this, we integrated a Came ZLX control panel paired with Ferni 24 motors, along with a GSM standalone intercom and an additional Telpad 2 to support convenient pedestrian access. The existing gate posts were retained, carefully sanded back, and refinished to match the restored gates, ensuring visual continuity across the entranceway.

Due to a cattle grid positioned beneath the gates, above-ground motors were selected, providing reliable automation without the need for groundwork.
This resulted in a secure, functional, and aesthetically faithful enhancement to the client’s estate.

“This project was fascinating from the outset, blending restoration of a historic listed gate with modern automation. We addressed challenges such as straightening the frame and fitting above-ground Ferni 24 motors, while our workshop handled the shot-blasting, and everything was refinished in satin black enamel for a period-appropriate look.”
